   그녀는 직접 반전시위에 가담해 체포되기도 했을만큼 반전운동도 맹렬했던 가수입니다.

   타고난 은빛 목소리와 다정한 어쿠스틱 기타로 노래하는 그녀는 "1960년대 모던 포크 붐" 을

   선도하면서 "포크의 여왕" 에 올랐죠........

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

   1950년대 말 보스턴의 커피하우스를 전전하며 연주하던 조운 바에즈는 1959년에 뉴포트 포크

   페스티벌에 참가하면서 널리 알려졌다.

   천사 같은 목소리의 예쁜 아가씨가 청중을 깜짝 놀라게 만든 것이다.

   여기서는 후에 그녀의 특징으로 부각되는 이데올로기적 입장은 보이지 않지만 이 초창기에도

   정치성은 그녀에게 중요했다.

   전 멤버가 공산주의자라는 혐의를 받고 있던 포크 그룹 위버스의 음반을 발매한 뱅가드라는

   작은 레이블을 선택해 음반계약을 체결한 것이다.

   그 결정은 바에즈와 뱅가드 모두에게 좋은 결실을 가져왔다.

   이 셀프타이틀 데뷔앨범은 지금까지도 여성 솔로 포크 앨범 가운데 가장 많이 팔리고 있으며,

   바에즈가 받은 6장의 골드레코드 가운데 첫 장을 기록했다(당시는 싱글차트가 최고권위를

   누리던 시기이기 때문에 더욱 대단한 성공이다).

   바에즈는 뱅가드를 통해 17장의 음반을 냈다. 후에 ‘포크의 왕’이라는 별명을 얻은 밥 딜런과

   연관해 ‘여왕’이라는 칭호를 받지만(딜런도 처음부터 바에즈를 존경했다), 딜런과 연관되는 것은

   그녀가 처음으로 당대의 곡을 노래하기 시작한 세 번째 앨범부터다.

   20세에 발표한 이 데뷔앨범은 영국과 미국의 발라드 등 구전 포크송을 담고 있는데 특히

   ‘Wildwood Flower’와 ‘House Of The Rising Sun’은 떨리면서도 청아한 그녀의 목소리를

   잘 보여준다.

   아직은 그녀가 저항운동의 선두에 나서기 전이었지만, 이 앨범에 나타난 그녀의 강인함과 연민,

   용기는 새로운 세대를 위해 포크음악을 재탄생시키는 데 큰 역할을 했다.
